About Dakshina Kannada
Dakshin Kannada is a district in the state of Karnataka. It lies about 300 kilometres to the west of states capital – Bangalore. Headquarters of the district are at Mangalore. It is one among the two biggest cities in district other being Puttur. The district shares its boundaries with districts of Udupi, Chikmaglur, Hassan and Kodagu. It also shares borders with the state of Kerala to its south.
The district is regarded as one of the most prominent districts in Karnataka second only to Banglore Urban. Geographically the district enjoys a distinct position. It is surrounded by the Arabian Sea in the west and by the Western Ghats in the east. Climate wise district enjoys a tropical monsoon type of climate. It receives ample rainfall in the season.
The district has a reputation for being ‘cradle of Indian Banking’ as many nationalised banks have originated from here. It is also known for its ‘Magloire tiles’ and cashew processing factories. Mangalore also houses facilities of many major IT companies among many other companies in various industries. In terms of Education, Dakshina Kannada provides opportunities to pursue a wide range of streams. National Institute of Technology Surathkal, College of Fisheries at Yekkur, Kasturba Medical college are some of many reputed colleges in the district. It also houses research Institutes like Directorate of Cashew Research, Puttur and The central Plantation Crops Research Institute in Vittal.
