The city of Bagalkot is located in the northern part of Karnataka state. It is situated along the branch of the river Ghatprabha. Bagalkot city is district headquarters of the Bagalkot district. The district shares its borders with Vijayapura, Raichur, Koppal, Gadag and Belgavi districts.

The city has a unique position in that it is situated within 500 kilometres of two of the biggest cities in the country, namely Bangalore and Hyderabad. It is located 481 km northwest of Banglore, which is the capital of the state. From Hyderabad distance of Bagalkot is roughly 410 kilometres. The city also lies only 570 kilometres from the commercial capital of the country – Mumbai.
