About Bijapur

Bijapur is a famous historical city. It is headquarters of Bijapur district in the state of Karnataka. Officially, Bijapur is known as Vijayapur. The name Vijayapur means, city of victory. This city was founded in the 10-11th century by Kalyani Chalukyas. Since then it witnessed many dynasties rising and falling. Owing to this rich history Bijapur is a city known for its architectural marvels. The city is situated 530 kilometres from Bangalore, Capital of Karnataka. It also is situated only 550 kilometres from Mumbai and 384 kms from city of Hyderabad. The district of Bijapur is bordered by Solapur district in the north, Sangli in northwest Belgaum in the west, Gulbarga in the east, Raichur in Southeast and Bagalkot district in the south.
