B Sc Nursing

BSc Nursing means Bachelors of science in nursing. The course prepares students to become a registered nurse and registered midwife. It is an undergraduate level programme. Duration of the course is four years. The entry point of the course is after 12th class.B.Sc. Nursing is regulated under UGC. Institute offering the course must be approved by the Indian Nursing Council(INC) which is the supreme authority for nursing courses in India.

The course is highly sought after among students looking to make a career in nursing. According to the data provided in the All India Survey on Higher Education 2018 -19 (AISHE) report by the ministry of human resources and development published in 2019 – enrollment in B.Sc in nursing has increased steadily. It has gone up from 218882 in 201-17 to 239485 in 2017-18 session and even more to 255071 in 2018-19 session.

    B Sc Nursing Admission Eligibility

    The minimum qualifications required to take admission in B.sc. Nursing, as defined by are as follows :

    B Sc Nursing Branches/Specialization

    B.Sc. Nursing prepares nurses for generalised nursing practice. The course focuses on developing competency in the area of wellness health promotion, disease management and care. It aims at training nurses to assume professional responsibilities as competent nurses and midwives in providing promotive, preventive, curative and rehabilitative healthcare. It also prepares nurses to take the role of a teacher or supervisor and manager in clinical health settings along with training them to be successful practitioners. Patient-centred care, professionalism, Leadership, System-based practise, Health Information and technology, communication, teamwork and collaboration, safety, Quality management and evidence-based practice. These are the core competency areas targeted in the programme.

    B Sc Nursing Career Prospects

    BSc Nursing is a job-oriented course. This means you can get registered as a nurse directly after this course. However to ensure better career prospects you may also choose to pursue higher education.

    Higher Education

    As discussed, Bsc (Nursing) is an undergraduate-level course. After this course, you may pursue MSc in Nursing. This course is offered by many reputable institutes including AIIMS. After the Masters, you can further pursue a PhD in Nursing. You can also explore options of a short term specialization diploma course after BSC nursing such as a diploma in nursing administration or diploma in critical care Nursing etc.

    Jobs and career after BSc Nursing

    The registration you can get after completing this course is R.N. and R.M. ( Registered Nurse and Registered Midwife). It means you can start practising as a nurse right away. As a clinical nurse and midwifery nurse, you can choose to take up a job in Public or Private hospitals. Apart from being a staff nurse, you can also become a home nurse or work with armed forces incapacity of a nurse. As the career proceeds, you may expect to gain the position of a nursing officer and other such posts.

    At the beginning of their career, nurses may expect to earn around 15,000 to 20,000 rupees per month. If hired by a reputable hospital this salary may go up to 40,000 rupees. In central government and many state governments, the salary can even go up to 55-70 thousand rupees.

    A report published in 2016 by FICCI called the Heal report on nursing reforms revealed that there are only 1.7 nurses per thousand people in India. The ideal ratio according to WHO is 2.5 per thousand people. This and other reports clearly demonstrate a wide demand-supply gap in the nursing sector in India. Hence there are tremendous opportunities in the field. The scope is only going to rise as India expands its medical infrastructure which is always a priority in a developing country like ours.

    In cities like Bangalore the pay is generally more than other areas.The working opportunities are also a lot more in such areas as a large number of hospitals and health care facilities of all scales are centred around urban areas.

    B Sc Nursing Entrance Exams

    There are multiple entrance exams conducted for B.Sc. nursing. These Exams are conducted on the state level by individual states. Also, some universities conduct their own entrance exams for admissions. These universities include AIIMS (offers B.Sc. honours), JIPMER and BHU among others. Indian Army also conducts B.Sc. nursing entrance for admission in four years at the College of Nursing at Armed forces medical services.
