The generalized syllabus of Instrumentation engineering followed by various government and as well as private colleges are as follow:

• According to estimates by Industry Chambers, the total cost of production of instrumentation related products in India at present is around Rs. 5000 crores per annum.

The production is about 15 % of the total demand; the rest is met by imports.

In 2002-2003, the consumer electronics goods production stood at Rs.37500 crores. According to the MAIT report this has grown by about 10 times in 2010.

For medical hardware the market size is Rs.6500 crores. Compared to this the market size in China was Rs.11500 crores in 2001 with the import component being about 50%. Even if these numbers may be disputed, the growth potential in India is huge.

In developed countries, there is a well-established link between instrumentation industry and the quantity and quality of innovations

In 1999, it was 0.6% for India compared to 3.8% for Sweden, 2.5% for USA, 2.8% for Japan, and 2.7% for South Korea (UNDP, Human Development. Report, 2003). It is only now that the government has increased this to 1.2% in 2003.

According to the new Science and Technology Policy announced in 2003, it is expected to go up to 2% by the end of the 10th Plan.

Indian companies have developed and fabricated the critical components needed by them. The participating companies, apart from financial aspects, have also enriched themselves in expertise and skills.

There are several entrance exams which are held across the country to take admission in the course of Bachelor of Technology in Instrumentation Engineering.  Some entrance exams being JEE Mains and Advance.

A lot of Instrumentation Engineering colleges in Bangalore and Karnataka are offering specialization in this course. Many of the private, government and deemed universities offer this course. Each college has its own eligibility criteria, fees structure and admission procedure.

Admission in Instrumentation Engineering course is either based on the merit list or entrance exam. Usually, Universities prepare a merit list of students based on their 10+2 marks and entrance results. Some of the institutes also conduct entrance examination along with personal interviews for the selection of the candidates for the course admission. Admission process differs from college to college, few colleges also admit students directly through management quota for the course.
