CCIM describes Unani as a form of traditional medicine practised in middle-east and south Asian countries. Unani refers to a tradition of Graeco-Arabic medicine based on teachings of Greek physician Hippocrates and Roman Physician Galen and developed into elaborate medical system in middle age era by Arabian and Persian physicians such as Rhazes, Avicenna, Al-Zahrawi and Ibn Nafis. With the establishment of Delhi Sultanate in India in the 12th and 13th century, Unani medicine also arrived in India.Unani medicine is included in CCIM as per the IMCC Act, 1970. It is one of the AYUSH systems of medicine and has found great thrust recently with the push given to AYUSH systems of medicine.
BUMS is a 4 and ½ years duration bachelor’s degree course in Unani medicine. One can take admission in the course after completing 12th or one-year pretib. CCIM is the supreme regulatory body for BUMS courses. In Karnataka, the course is run under Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Science Bangalore.
