Food Processing and Technology is a set of methods and techniques used to transform raw ingredients into finished and semi-finished products. Good quality raw materials from both plant and animal source are converted into attractive, marketable and long shelf-life food products. Once processed, you can store the end products according to the expiry dates and use it whenever required, as mass production can result in wastage of food. Food Technology involves the science and application of scientific, socio-economic and legal rules for production. Study of food technology gives a comprehensive knowledge of science and technology and the skill to preserve and utilize food products. This course also teaches selection of raw materials, storage of processed food, preservation, processing, packaging, distribution of nutritional, wholesome and desirable food (with safety). Food processing is one of the largest manufacturing industries in the present times.
B.Sc Food Processing and Technology is an undergraduate degree course which is of 3 year duration. Students with a minimum of 50% or more in 10+2 in Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Home Science subjects are eligible for the course. The job scope for a successful graduate of B.Sc Food Processing and Technology is high in demand. In the 21st century, food technologists are challenged to produce foods suitable for health and other changing needs of consumers. Food Technology was initially used to serve military needs.
