Shalya Tantra is the branch of Ayurveda that deals with surgical procedures. The knowledge of these procedures has been used for thousands of years and is still applicable. Gallstones, Injury to marma, Piles, Inflammatory conditions etc can be treated with the procedures taught under the course.4 It also includes knowledge of para surgical procedures like Agni karma, Ksharkarma, Jalukavacharana and Khsarsutra.
In the course, students are expected to learn the diagnosis of various surgical disorders and surgical techniques. They are also given knowledge of trauma and surgical emergency management etc. The course leads to the speciality in surgery.5
From the past few decades, the perception of people towards traditional medicine has been changing. Not only in the east but in west Ayurveda is gaining massive popularity since the 1980s7. Also on the level of Government, various measures are being taken for the promotion of Ayurveda by AYUSH ministry.8
