Shalya Tantra is the branch of Ayurveda that deals with surgical procedures. The knowledge of these procedures has been used for thousands of years and is still applicable. Gallstones, Injury to marma, Piles, Inflammatory conditions etc can be treated with the procedures taught under the course.4 It also includes knowledge of para surgical procedures like Agni karma, Ksharkarma, Jalukavacharana and Khsarsutra.
In the course, students are expected to learn the diagnosis of various surgical disorders and surgical techniques. They are also given knowledge of trauma and surgical emergency management etc. The course leads to the speciality in surgery.5
From the past few decades, the perception of people towards traditional medicine has been changing. Not only in the east but in west Ayurveda is gaining massive popularity since the 1980s7. People’s realisation of side effects of synthetic medicine and the desire to move towards a more naturally based system of medicine can be attributed as the driving factor behind this change.
The growing popularity of Ayurveda is evidenced by the study conducted by Confederation of Indian Industry and PwC. Findings of this study as mentioned in economic times report predict that net worth of industry set to become 9.7 billion dollars by 2022.
NCBI discusses in their article how on a global scale, W.H.O. is focusing on Ayurveda under its programme to promote traditional medicines. It is working towards mainstreaming of such medicine systems. Academic courses in Ayurveda are recognised worldwide, which give additional accreditation to this holistic system of medicine. Also on the level of Government, various measures are being taken for the promotion of Ayurveda by AYUSH ministry.8
All of these factors point toward a tremendous growth in the field of Ayurveda from a career perspective. There is going to be no dearth of opportunities for capable people willing to make their careers in the field of Ayurveda.
Average ayurvedic doctor salaries start from 24k and go up to 62 k according to glassdoor. A PG degree definitely adds more to it.
