B.Sc. (Post Basic) in Nursing is an undergraduate course of Post basic level. You can pursue this course as a registered nurse for additional qualification. It aims at upgrading the skills of GNM nurses. In order to help them gain higher-level competencies in their roles as nurses and midwives. Duration of the course in regular mode is two years. However, if you pursue it in distance mode duration will be of 3 years.
The course is regulated under UGC. Indian Nursing Council (INC) is the registration and controlling body for the course. According to the AISHE report, 2018-19 published by MHRD a total of 24948 had enrolled for the course. Admission process for the course is varied. Many universities take admissions based on entrance exams. However, some universities take merit in consideration for admission.

    Sl.   Criteria for eligibility  Exceptions
    1. Higher Secondary/Senior secondary/Intermediate/10+2 or equivalent A person who passed 10+1 in or before 1986 will also be eligible
    2. Certificate in General Nursing and Midwifery They must also be registered as R.N.R.M. with states Nurse Registration Council. A Male nurse trained before the new integrated course was implemented will have to produce  (besides being registered as a nurse with State Nurses registration council) evidence of training approved by INC in one of the following areas in lieu of midwifery: O.T. Techniques or Leprosy Nursing or TB Nursing or Ophthalmic Nursing or Neurological and neurosurgical Nursing or Psychiatric Nursing or Community Health Nursing/Cancer Nursing or Orthopedic Nursing.
    3. Medical fitness of candidate is required

    A B.Sc. Post Basic (Nursing) degree prepares you as a professional and competent nurse. The objective of the course is to render the following skills to the learner – be able to assess and identify nursing needs and then implement the care needed. They will learn as part of a health team to deliver promotive, preventive, curative and restorative health care. The course teaches concepts and principles from selected areas of nursing, physical, biological and behavioural sciences. It also includes skills of communication, interpersonal relationship, managerial skills in community health settings, leadership qualities and decision making in various situation. Also, nurses are trained to participate in research activities and recognise the need for continued learning for personal and professional development and practice ethical values in their personal and professional lives.

    PB B Sc Nursing Course Syllabus

    As a Post Basic B.Sc. degree pursuing nurse you may expect following topics to be covered in the syllabus

    First-year

    Nutrition and Dietetics, Nursing foundation, Psychology, Biochemistry and Biophysics, Maternal Nursing, Microbiology, Child Health Nursing and Medical and Surgical Nursing. English will be included in syllabus this year as a qualifying subject. Practicals of Medical and Surgical Nursing, Maternal Nursing and child health nursing will also be included.

    Second-year

    Subjects covered in second-year syllabus are as follows – Introduction to Nursing education, Community Health Nursing, Sociology, Mental Health Nursing. Introduction to Nursing Research & Statistics and Introduction to nursing administration. Practicals will include Community Health Nursing, mental health NUrsing and a research project.

    PB B Sc Nursing Entrance Exams

    Admission process for Post Basic B.Sc. in nursing is varied. However, most prominent institutes conduct entrance exams. Exams are also conducted for admission by various states at the state level. Some of the universities/colleges that conduct their own entrance exams are Armed force Medical College Pune, AIIMS, PGIMER Chandigarh etc. IGNOU also conducts its own entrance exam for admission in the course called IGNOU OPENNET.
