Dental science is a branch of medical science dealing with studying the structure of teeth and their treatment of various problems. Their multiple courses that come under this field of medical science, including BDS, which is the bachelor of dental surgery, MDS, which is the masters of Medical surgery, diploma in dental hygienist, and Ph.D. in dental sciences. BDS’s course is open to students who have passed their class 12th with biology, chemistry, and physics as their main subject. After completing the course of BDS, students can also pursue the Master’s course in the dental sciences, which is the MDS, after which students can go for Ph. D. For a smaller duration course, students can opt to go for the dental hygienist diploma after completing their class 12th.

    Pursuing the course opens up job opportunities for students in India and foreign countries and getting high pay. The course offers subjects like oral surgery, dental histology, oral pathology to the students. Pursuing the course of BDS widens up the job opportunity in India. Every year, over 2.7 lakh people register as a dentist in India, whereas the total Indian population is 133 corers. If a rough estimate is calculated, then it can be concluded that there is one dentist for every 5000 people, which is quite a less number. The government is planning to increase the employment opportunities for private as well as government sectors in India.

    After clearing the exams such as NBDE and NDBE, students can go to countries like the US and Canada for the job. Job offered by these countries in dental science is five times more than that of jobs in India. Also, as per the latest reports, gulf countries have a huge demand for dentists from India or students studying any course in dental sciences in India and paying a salary around Rs. 1-1.5 lakhs per month. Consider the ration of dentists per person; job opportunities in medical science will increase over time.

    As per a govt report, it highlighted that there has a rise in the number of dentists in India and total number of dental surgeons registered with the central/state dental councils up to December 31, 2018, was 2,54,283.

    The average salary for people doing the job as a dentist in India is Rs/-3-4 lakhs per annum. The salary for the same job profile outside India will be higher. The salary depends on the year of experience you have and the degrees you have obtained.
